Indigenous Peoples have been monitoring, collecting data, and stewarding the land and the environment across the ages. This has led to a rich knowledge base, known as Traditional Ecological Knowledge, which is a part of Indigenous Knowledge, a recognized science. Traditional Ecological Knowledge includes a vast body of information about the interconnected elements of the environment, information that has been transmitted through oral storytelling.

In this session, we will be planting the Three Sisters (corn, squash, and beans), testing tap water at home, and learning how these elements interconnect. We will also take part in a Virtual Reality experience where participants travel in a virtual canoe and learn about traditional Haudenosaunee, or Six Nations, cultures.

Let’s Talk Cancer at McMaster is going virtual this year! That means we are opening the symposium up nationally across Canada! This year's theme is COVID and Cancer.

We are hosting two consecutive half-day events (~2.5 hours per day) on the virtual webinar platform Zoom. We recommend attending both days, but if you can only make it to one of the days, we suggest you consult the agenda (details to come). We are excited to host Let’s Talk Cancer virtually this year and have amazing speakers, interactive sessions, and activities lined up! The event is recommended for students in Grades 11 and 12.

Developed in partnership with McGill University, Massively Multiplayer Online Science and the Microsetta Initiative, Borderlands Science is a puzzle game that contributes to real world scientific research. By solving simple block puzzles, players earn in-game rewards AND organize data so scientists can map the DNA of bacteria found in the human digestive system. Co-creator and McGill Associate Professor Jérôme Waldispühl shows us how.

Virtual International Astronomy Day (vIAD) is a free all-day event hosted by the Ottawa Chapter using the Zoom webinar platform on Saturday, May 15th. Throughout the day we will be providing a variety of live streams from different amateur astronomers in the Ottawa area. You will have an opportunity to see live video streams from different types of telescopes, showing views of the Sun, Moon, and deep-sky objects such as galaxies and globular clusters. In addition to the live scope views, other local astronomers will be giving short astronomy-related presentations on various topics. This event is rain or shine and is meant for people of all ages.
