DDO Astronomy Night: The Life Cycle of Massive Stars
This talk will explore the evolution of massive stars, starting from their birth to how they end their life in the form of a supernova. Adaeze Ibik is a PhD student in the David A. Dunlap Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Toronto. She is from the eastern part of Nigeria in Africa where she earned her Bachelors and Masters in Physics, both from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. One of the reasons for her research is to understand the universe and create awareness of our origin as humans through science communication.

Diversity & Inclusion 101
An open discussion about EDI in Newfoundland & Labrador and nationally. After a short video we’ll have a great, open discussion.

SCIENCE OF YOGA: Mindfulness and Your Nervous System with Ann Swanson
Perhaps the most profound evidence supporting yoga practice is on meditation, including the increasingly popular mindfulness practice. But, what is mindfulness? Discover the fascinating science behind mindfulness for mental health, focus, sleep, and more. This workshop is quite experiential with meditations and mindful movement built-in throughout the session to reset your nervous system.

Panel on Women in Engineering

Real Life Engineering Stories
A workshop for high school students considering engineering. Real life stories about what engineers do and what it’s like to be an engineering student!

Earthquake-induced soil liquefaction
The Lower Mainland of British Columbia is located in a seismically active geographic region. As such, it is of relevance to recognize the possibility of an earthquake in our neighbourhood. This talk is intended to present information with particular focus on earthquake-induced soil liquefaction. Some key findings from a comprehensive laboratory experimental research program conducted at the University of British Columbia to study the mechanical behavior of natural fine-grained soils are included. The impact of liquefaction-induced geotechnical hazards and their impacts on the performance of infrastructure, along with engineering approaches to mitigate the risk of damage due to liquefaction are presented.

Students’ Perspective on EDI
Students’ perspective on the current commitment and work that is being done for EDI across Canada by engineering students.

Breaking Barriers
Join OSPE as we explore gender barriers, role models, mentors, and how to introduce young girls to engineering.

Let’s Talk Genomics – Real ‘Life Hacks’: Synthetic Biology for Tomorrow
What would you do if you could start coding for the living world? Come up with ways to reverse climate change? Cure cancer? Get rid of polluting plastics? Feed the world? Welcome to the world of Synthetic Biology, the field of science that involves redesigning organisms for useful purposes by engineering them to have new abilities – live-action coding for 21st-century problems.
Explore the frontiers of this new field: what it means, why it matters, and how it is being channeled for the world’s benefit. Join this online symposium with experts from genomics, ethics, law, and entrepreneurship to discover how synthetic biology is addressing global problems, and how you can be part of these solutions for our future.

Physics and Astronomy Colloquia: Dr. Tien-Tien Yu, University of Oregon
“Uncovering the identity of dark matter is one of the big open questions in physics today. The sub-GeV dark matter mass range has received increased interest in the last several years, owing to the lack of any unambiguous signal of the canonical WIMP in the GeV-TeV mass range. The sub-GeV mass range is relatively unexplored due to the difficulty of detecting such light dark matter with traditional techniques. However, there have been recent experimental developments that finally make sub-GeV direct detection viable."

Energy Efficiency Workshop
This interactive workshop will provide a purposeful learning activity with the aim of improving knowledge, skills, and competencies related to energy efficiency.
